Senate President Godswill Akpabio has said the recent rise in insecurity in parts of the country is politically driven, linking it to manoeuvres ahead of the 2027 general elections.
He made the remarks yesterday during the commissioning of a major tax administration facility by the Nigeria Revenue Service in Abuja, suggesting that the situation is aimed at undermining President Bola Tinubu’s administration.
Akpabio expressed confidence that the disturbances would fade after the election period, insisting that Nigerians remain supportive of the President.
“You are seeing insecurity today. It is even increasing because elections are coming,” he said, adding that some actors were deliberately fuelling unrest to distract the government.
He further stated that the situation would not last beyond the electoral cycle, saying, “As soon as elections are over, watch out, the first few weeks, you may not hear of such incidents again.”
According to him, political opposition to the administration is intensifying as President Tinubu continues to gain support across party lines, driven by reforms in revenue generation, fiscal policy and relations with state governments.
“With less than 18 governors at a time, he now has close to 30 or more under his influence,” Akpabio said, describing it as evidence of growing political alignment ahead of 2027.
He also declared confidence in Tinubu’s re-election prospects, saying Nigerians still view him as central to the country’s future.
“Nigerians cannot do without you in 2027,” he said.
Akpabio maintained that despite criticism, the administration’s record in infrastructure and economic reforms continues to gain public attention.
“In less than three years, what we see are projects, projects, and more projects,” he said.
He defended key policy decisions such as fuel subsidy removal and tax reforms, describing them as necessary steps to stabilise the economy and strengthen public finances.
He added that the National Assembly would continue to support the administration’s reform agenda while urging Nigerians to remain patient as policies take effect.
