Former presidential candidate and Labour Party stalwart, Peter Obi, has reaffirmed his commitment to serve only one term if elected president, insisting that sincere leadership can transform Nigeria within four years.
In a statement shared on his verified social media handles, Obi addressed the growing public reaction to his earlier declaration that he would only serve for a single term. He said it was “baffling” that his stance had sparked agitation, suggesting that many Nigerians have lost faith in the possibility of genuine, time-bound governance.
“If service is the motive, turning the tide in four years is possible,” Obi declared. He stressed that his ambition was not driven by desperation or entitlement, but by a commitment to see Nigeria work. He distanced himself from common political traits such as aggressive rhetoric, unkept promises, and character attacks, adding that his political record remains free of electoral malpractice or thuggery.
“I challenge anyone: conduct your investigations. You will find no stains of rigging or violence associated with my name,” he said.
Obi argued that with focused leadership, four years was enough to fight corruption, redirect public funds from extravagant projects—such as new presidential jets—to critical sectors like education, healthcare, and infrastructure. He also promised to uphold the rule of law and ensure credible elections within the same period.
Reiterating his belief in fair play and service, Obi concluded: “Leadership, to me, is not about entitlement. It is about service. If given the mandate, for just one term, I will dedicate every moment to building a Nigeria that works for all.”
