January 3, 2025 – Lagos, Nigeria
In a show of solidarity and support, former Anambra State Governor and Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, visited human rights lawyer and activist, Dele Farotimi, in Lagos on Thursday. This visit came shortly after Obi had met with former President Olusegun Obasanjo.
Obi, in a statement posted on his social media, revealed that this was his first opportunity to meet Farotimi since the latter’s release from a correctional centre in Ekiti State. “I was pleased to find him in good spirits and deeply encouraged by his unwavering dedication to the struggle for a better Nigeria,” Obi remarked.
Dele Farotimi, who has been vocal in his critique of governance and systemic issues in Nigeria, was recently embroiled in legal battles stemming from accusations of defamation. Obi acknowledged his resilience in the face of these challenges and praised Farotimi’s courage, saying, “Dele Farotimi exemplifies courage in the face of adversity, consistently taking bold stands for good governance in our nation.”
The visit underscores Obi’s ongoing commitment to fostering a dialogue for national development, aligning with his vision of a “New Nigeria” that he believes is possible through collective effort and dedication. Obi expressed his hopes for a fruitful and productive year for Farotimi, emphasizing a continued collaboration towards the betterment of the country.
This interaction not only highlights the two’s personal relationship but also signals Obi’s support for activists working towards good governance and systemic change in Nigeria.
