Former Borno State Governor and All Progressives Congress (APC) chieftain, Ali Modu Sheriff, has said former Vice President Atiku Abubakar is unlikely to secure the support of Northern voters in the 2027 presidential election, arguing that the region believes power should remain in the South.
Speaking on Channels Television’s Politics Today on Monday, Sheriff said Nigeria’s long-standing power rotation arrangement should be upheld, particularly after former President Muhammadu Buhari completed two terms in office.
He maintained that the North has no justification for seeking the presidency in 2027, urging Atiku to defer any presidential ambition until 2031.
According to Sheriff, the power-sharing principle was introduced by political leaders after the civil war to foster national unity and promote fairness among Nigeria’s regions.
Sheriff also dismissed the presidential prospects of former Labour Party candidate Peter Obi, who is expected to contest the 2027 election under the newly registered Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC).
He argued that Obi’s tenure as governor of Anambra State has weakened his appeal among Northern voters, claiming that some political figures in the region have expressed reservations about aligning with the former Anambra governor.
