IMO INSECURITY: YOU ARE RESPONSIBLE!

ONWUASOANYA FCC JONES

The terrorists in Imo are not letting up. The more they are killed, the more their remnants try to let you know they still exist. They are on a clear mission to embarrass the government and make her appear clueless and unpopular.

Last weekend, they struck in many places and took many people hostage, including Lawman, the lawmaker who seems to have a little grip on the art. He was Speaker for a few hours, but, he is a former Speaker, still.

The governor might be struggling to contain the security situation. But, there is nowhere in the world where the security situation is perfect. America, UK, Israel, and all the countries we like to refer to as “the best”. They still have their internal security issues. Terrorists still take lives and thousands die every year still, AVOIDABLY.

It is sheer irresponsibility and an insult to our collective sensibilities to go to run around with the falsehoods that the current governor instigated the spate of insecurity ravaging the Southeast and that the former administration had security issues under absolute control. I read someone saying that “it was easy”. Haba! Why are we like this? Why do we insult the people we claim to love, as senseless.

The governor didn’t cause the insecurity in the State. He didn’t arm ESN operatives, he didn’t arm any militia group. He rather has been doing his best to combat the terrorists with every legitimate force he can afford. He is doing his best and a Chief Executive Officer of a State benefits nothing making his State ungovernable. If there is anybody or any group that could be said to derive any benefits from setting the State on fire, it is the opposition. But, I will not also say categorically that they did.

We didn’t have ESN three years ago and certainly all through the period our former governor held sway. We didn’t have Monday sit-at-homes, we didn’t have thousands of condemned prisoners let loose upon a State, we didn’t have BNG, we didn’t even have the Finnish Ekpa causing troubles and countering directives. We didn’t have the entire Southeast under a constant threat of terrorists posturing as freedom fighters.

Yet,

We had incidents of kidnapping in the State. Serving Commissioners were kidnapped, even top kidnap suspect was freed right inside the Owerri High Court within the premises of the Imo State Government House. We had one of the closest aides to the governor, Nkiru Sylvanus was kidnapped and kept in captivity for days. We had a serving LGA Chairman of the ruling Party assassinated in cold blood.

If we talk about State sponsored hit squads. There were also accusations against the former governor, which of course, I didn’t believe and still don’t believe. There could have been incidents of overzealous or rogue members of the Imo Security Network (ISN) accused of having a hand in the killing of some people.

We had Lazarus Anyanwu. Until date, we haven’t had a closure on Architect Ihemeghai. His corpse is yet to be recovered nor any arrests made or any trace of who took him and where they took him to. We had many incidents of criminality, in the same pattern as they were in other parts of the Southeast at that time.

Today, IMO’S security situation is not peculiar. The same thing is happening all over the Southeast. In PDP States, in APC States and the APGA State. We may argue that Imo is worst hit, but that’s an assumption, because we do not have a verified data independently and professionally generated to back up such claims.

Political leaders must take responsibility. Rget must act their status in the society. They should, rather than continue to give tacit justification for what is happening in the State, proffer solutions. They should condemn these bloodlettings going on, and they should assist security agencies with any information they may have. These information are not provided on radio or TV stations or on social media. Take a walk to the Police office or invite the Police man to your house and share the intelligence you have with him.

We may think it doesn’t concern us, but, I can assure us that for every innocent blood wasted, there must be a repercussion directly on those who had a hand in it. If not now, certainly, soon.

IMO MUST WIN!
