Reports from Kano suggest that a man was allegedly attacked in a busy market after openly canvassing support for President Bola Tinubu’s re election bid within the All Progressives Congress ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The incident was said to have occurred in one of the city’s major trading hubs, where the man reportedly engaged traders and a customer in political discussion before urging them to back the ruling party’s candidate. The conversation allegedly escalated, resulting in a physical confrontation. Details remain unclear, and authorities are yet to confirm the incident.

Some traders in the area claimed that political conversations in the marketplace often trigger strong reactions, especially in a state with deep political divisions and highly engaged voter sentiment.

Kano, a key commercial centre in northern Nigeria, has long been known for intense political participation, where party loyalties are strong and public political expression can quickly become contentious.

It could be recalled that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu recently secured the All Progressives Congress presidential ticket for the 2027 election cycle after emerging victorious in the party’s nationwide direct primary conducted across wards in all 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory.

The exercise reportedly featured only one other aspirant, Stanley Osifo, who contested against the incumbent president but was heavily defeated in the internal vote, as Tinubu consolidated overwhelming support across the party structure.

Osifo, an APC aspirant from Edo State, had maintained that the process should remain competitive despite the president’s incumbency, arguing that party members should freely determine their flagbearer.

The outcome effectively reaffirmed Tinubu’s position as the party’s sole presidential candidate heading into the 2027 elections, strengthening his political standing within the APC as preparations for the next electoral cycle begin.
