In a major breakthrough in the fight against violent crime, the Lagos State Police Command has confirmed the arrest of Wasiu Akinwande, also known as Olori Eso, a 44-year-old notorious gang leader and hired assassin. According to a statement released by the Police Public Relations Officer, CSP Benjamin Hundeyin, the arrest was made on June 20, 2025, during a well-coordinated special operation by the Tactical Squad of the Command.
Described by authorities as “the most wanted suspect in Lagos history in recent time,” Akinwande had been on the run for years, evading capture while allegedly masterminding numerous murders, armed robberies, kidnappings, and cult-related violence across the Mushin area and other parts of Lagos State.
“His arrest marks a huge success in the ongoing fight against violent crimes that are threats to security and safety of residents,” the statement read. The suspect was finally apprehended at his hideout in the Agbado area of neighbouring Ogun State after several failed attempts by police operatives.
Akinwande’s alleged crimes span over a decade, dating back to 2009. His reign of terror had “instilled fear and apprehension in residents and posed a dangerous threat to law and order,” the police said. His arrest follows years of intensive surveillance and a determined pursuit that saw him flee across various states in the country.
In addition to his arrest, the police recovered a cache of weapons and incriminating items during a raid on his residence in Mushin. Recovered exhibits include two AK-47 rifles, one K2 Assault rifle, three pump action rifles, two locally made single-barrel pistols, five magazines, 57 live cartridges, 70 rounds of 5.56 ammunition, 27 rounds of 9mm ammunition, an expended shell, a dagger, three walkie-talkies, and nine international passports belonging to various individuals.
“He freely admitted he was using [these weapons] for his killing operations with his gang,” the police said.
Following the arrest, the Commissioner of Police, CP Olohundare Jimoh, has directed the Deputy Commissioner of Police at the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) to broaden the investigation and apprehend other members of Akinwande’s criminal network. So far, four families have identified Akinwande as the suspect responsible for the deaths of their children and wards.
Reassuring residents of the Command’s commitment, CP Jimoh stated, “The safety and security [of Lagosians] remain the top priority of the Command.” He also commended the officers involved for their bravery and urged the public to continue supporting the police with timely information.
Akinwande is currently in police custody under tight security and will face prosecution for his crimes.
