The Nigerian military has announced the rescue of 62 hostages and the killing of two militants during operations targeting armed groups responsible for mass kidnappings. According to the army, the operation was carried out in response to recent abductions in parts of northwest and central Nigeria.
Military sources said the hostages were freed during coordinated ground and intelligence led operations. Weapons and logistics belonging to the militants were also recovered. The rescued victims are receiving medical and psychological support.
The army described the operation as part of sustained efforts to dismantle criminal networks involved in kidnapping for ransom. Security analysts say while such successes are significant, they highlight the scale of the challenge posed by armed groups operating across vast rural areas.
Residents in affected communities welcomed the rescue but urged authorities to maintain a permanent security presence. The military reiterated its commitment to protecting civilians and restoring stability, while calling for cooperation from local communities to provide timely intelligence.
