The Abia State government has launched a new cashless payment system called the Abia Connect Card for commuters using the Green Shuttle transport service. Officials described the move as part of an ongoing effort to modernise public transport and reduce cash transactions within the system.

Introduced under the administration of Governor Alex Otti, the card allows passengers to pay fares by tapping on a device installed in the vehicles. After tapping, a confirmation tone signals successful payment. Authorities said the first card is free, although every top up attracts a fifty naira fee. The card does not expire and stored funds remain valid indefinitely. Each card is meant for one person per trip and is accepted on all approved Green Shuttle routes.

Residents can register and collect the card at designated Central Bus Terminals across the state, including Ariaria Junction, MCC, Osisioma Flyover, Tonimas, Port Harcourt Road Aba First Bus Stop at Cemetery, Ala Oji Flyover, Ebem Park, Abiriba Junction, Akara Junction and Uzuakoli. An ABSSIN is required for enrolment.

Officials said the initiative represents a significant shift toward a more structured and transparent transport system in Abia. The government noted that the Connect Card is one component of a broader digital reform plan aimed at improving efficiency and accountability in public services.
