Airtel Nigeria has introduced the Airtel Spam Alert Service, a new solution aimed at protecting subscribers from fraudulent and spam SMS messages.
The telecommunications company stated the service was developed as part of its ongoing efforts to enhance user safety and digital security.
In a statement on Thursday, Airtel highlighted the increasing risk of telecom-related scams and explained how the new service is designed to address the issue.
“The Spam Alert Service is a proactive solution created to protect our customers. It is built with intelligent filters that automatically detect and block suspicious SMS before they reach the end user,” the company said.
Subscribers will receive real-time notifications when a suspected spam or phishing message is identified. The service also flags known scam numbers to help users make informed decisions about communications.
According to Airtel, the service uses an AI algorithm that analyzes more than 250 parameters, including sender behavior, message frequency, geographical distribution, and unusual activity patterns. The process completes in under two milliseconds and does not involve reading the content of messages, thereby maintaining user privacy.
“We understand how sophisticated digital fraudsters have become. That’s why we have invested in an AI-powered system that scans communication patterns and flags anything that seems suspicious,” the company added.
Dinesh Balsingh, CEO of Airtel Nigeria, said: “Nigeria is a key market for us and a leader in digital adoption on the continent. Our AI Spam Alert Service reflects our dedication to safeguarding customers from the growing threat of SMS fraud.
“As the first of its kind in Africa, it addresses important issues of trust and security within the digital ecosystem. We plan to offer this service across our African operations.
“The AI Spam Alert Service aims to build a safer digital environment for our users and is part of our strategy to use advanced technologies that solve real challenges while improving customer experience.”
After its launch in Nigeria, the Spam Alert Service has also been introduced in Tanzania and Kenya, with plans to extend coverage throughout Airtel’s African markets.
The service is automatically activated for all Airtel customers, including those using smartphones and feature phones, ensuring broad accessibility.
Early user feedback indicates the service is effective in identifying potentially harmful messages without disrupting normal communication.
Through this AI-driven spam detection tool, Airtel Africa aims to address critical security concerns affecting its subscribers.
