Former Vice President and presidential candidate Atiku Abubakar has reportedly stepped up consultations to identify a suitable running mate after reports emerged that respected economist and former international development executive, Ngozi Okonjo-Iwela, declined an offer to become his vice-presidential candidate.
According to sources familiar with the discussions, Atiku had been engaging several high-profile technocrats and political figures to strengthen his ticket and improve its national appeal. However, Ngozi Okonjo-Iwela is said to have turned down the offer due to personal and professional considerations.
The development has reportedly pushed Atiku’s camp to broaden its search, extending consultations across different geopolitical zones and among key political stakeholders. Analysts say the selection of a running mate remains a strategic factor in Nigerian elections, often influencing regional balance, voter perception, and coalition strength.
Although there is no official confirmation from Atiku’s media team regarding the reported offer or rejection, insiders indicate that discussions are still ongoing and multiple names remain under consideration. The eventual choice is expected to shape campaign direction and strengthen political support ahead of future elections.
