The Anti Narcotics Cell of Ambala Police has arrested a Nigerian national and recovered 294 grams of MDMA, a synthetic narcotic substance, from his possession.
The suspect was identified as Mbacha Ikechukwu David.
Speaking on Wednesday, Ambala Deputy Superintendent of Police Jagbir Malik said the development stemmed from an earlier operation carried out on June 19, during which anti narcotics officers arrested a Kurukshetra resident, Surinder, and a woman while they were travelling from Delhi to Ambala on a motorcycle. Police recovered 55 grams of heroin from the pair and subsequently registered a case under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act at Parao Police Station.
According to the DSP, the two suspects later informed investigators during interrogation that they had purchased the heroin from a Nigerian supplier based in Delhi.
Acting on the information, police launched a follow up operation and apprehended Mbacha Ikechukwu David in Delhi. A search of his rented apartment led to the recovery of 294 grams of MDMA, which authorities estimated to have a market value of about Rs 30 lakh.
Preliminary findings indicated that the suspect entered India on a student visa but was allegedly involved in the supply of illegal drugs.
Police said further questioning of the accused would focus on identifying the source of the narcotics and uncovering his customer network as part of efforts to dismantle the wider drug trafficking operation.
“During the remand, the police will obtain information about his source and clients so that the entire nexus can be busted,” DSP Jagbir Malik said.
