Former Anambra State Governor, Peter Obi, has held a series of high level meetings with senior South African officials in Cape Town, focusing on immigration, regional cooperation, and rising tensions affecting African migrants.

Obi disclosed that the engagements followed earlier discussions with Nigerians in Cape Town, describing the meetings as “meaningful discussions” with key government and political leaders in South Africa.

He met with Mr Leon Schreiber, South Africa’s Minister of Home Affairs; Mr Velenkosini Hlabisa, Minister of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs; and Mr Gayton McKenzie, Minister of Sports, Arts and Culture.

Describing the talks, Obi said:

“Our conversations were productive and candid, focusing on the current challenges that affect both countries, particularly those related to migration, economic strains, youth unemployment, security issues, and the rising tensions faced by African foreigners in South Africa.”

He stressed the need for stronger cooperation between Nigeria and South Africa, noting that both countries must deepen dialogue and pursue solutions anchored on justice, mutual respect, and the rule of law.

According to him, “Nigeria and South Africa, both prominent African nations, must enhance dialogue, bolster cooperation, and seek solutions based on justice, mutual respect, and adherence to the rule of law. In challenging times, leaders and citizens alike need to demonstrate responsible leadership, compassion, and restraint.”

Obi further stated that participants at the meetings emphasised the importance of lawful conduct and peaceful engagement in addressing grievances.

“We collectively stressed the importance of law abiding behaviour, avoiding violence, resisting hate or provocation, and allowing lawful institutions to address grievances through democratic and constitutional processes, regardless of the challenges we face,” he said.

He concluded that Africa’s progress depends on unity, inclusive economic policies, and the protection of human dignity across borders, adding that “the progress of Africa hinges on our ability to create unity, foster economic inclusivity, invest in our communities, and uphold the dignity of every African, no matter where they live.”
