Former Anambra State Governor, Peter Obi, has arrived in Cape Town, South Africa, to participate in the Spier Dialogue 2026, a high level forum focused on Africa’s future and global development challenges.

Obi disclosed that the event comes at a critical moment for the continent, as African nations continue to confront challenges in governance, democracy, economic inclusion, urbanisation, migration, and leadership. He noted, however, that Africa also holds significant promise driven by its youthful population and growing creativity.

According to him, the dialogue will bring together leaders and stakeholders from different regions to exchange ideas on policy direction and sustainable growth. He is also scheduled to address participants on strategies aimed at advancing development and strengthening institutions across the continent.

Obi stressed that Africa’s future must not be defined by poverty in the midst of resources or by division instead of progress. He called for a shift from consumption driven economies to production based systems, and from divisive politics to leadership grounded in competence, compassion, and accountability.

On arrival in Cape Town, he also met with members of the Nigerian community, where discussions reportedly lasted over two hours. The engagement focused on recent challenges affecting African expatriates in South Africa.

He reaffirmed his commitment to advocating for what he described as a new direction for Nigeria and Africa, emphasising governance rooted in service, integrity, and opportunity for young people.

He concluded with a message of optimism, stating that a better Nigeria is possible.
