The Edo State Police Command has arrested a social media personality, Uzebor Emmanuel, popularly known as “Aza Woman,” over viral claims alleging the kidnapping of students in parts of Benin City.

The arrest follows an earlier police statement dismissing reports of alleged abductions involving students of Green Park Academy, Aduwawa, and Western Boys’ College, Ikpoba Hill, as false and misleading.

According to the police, preliminary investigations revealed that the suspect knowingly circulated false information on social media, claiming that about six people had been kidnapped using mini transport buses. The posts further alleged that some victims escaped from their captors while others secured their release after paying ransom.

The Command said the publications sparked widespread fear among residents and had the potential to erode public confidence in the state’s security framework.

In a statement issued on Friday, the Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Eno Ikoedem, warned against the deliberate spread of misinformation, particularly on issues relating to public safety.

“The Edo State Police Command reiterates that the deliberate spread of false information, particularly on matters relating to public safety and security, is a serious offence with far-reaching consequences,” the statement read.

The Command noted that such actions could create unnecessary panic, disrupt public order, and divert security personnel and resources from genuine emergencies.

“The security of a state should never be jeopardized for views, engagement, online relevance, or any other form of social media gratification,” the police added.

Police further disclosed that the suspect would be charged to court upon the conclusion of investigations.

The Command also urged members of the public to verify information through credible sources before sharing it and to avoid using social media platforms to spread unverified claims capable of disturbing public peace and order.
