United Nigeria Airlines (UNA) has announced a significant partnership with Cronos Airlines, marking a pivotal moment for Nigeria’s aviation sector.

The agreement, signed by Prof. Obiora Okonkwo, Chairman of United Nigeria Airlines, and a representative of Cronos Airlines, is set to pave the way for the construction of Nigeria’s first Maintenance, Repair, and Overhaul (MRO) facility.

This development is a crucial step for the country’s airline industry, which has been seeking ways to enhance operational efficiency and reduce costs.

During the signing ceremony, Prof. Okonkwo emphasized the importance of this partnership, stating, “This strategic move aims to create more jobs locally, contribute to economic stability, and boost overall airline operations.”

The establishment of the MRO facility is expected to significantly enhance the efficiency of maintenance services for aircraft, thereby reducing downtime and operational costs for airlines operating within Nigeria.

This facility will not only serve United Nigeria Airlines but is expected to support various carriers in the region, making it a key player in African aviation.

Addressing the key challenges faced by the aviation industry, Prof. Okonkwo pointed out that high operational costs, exacerbated by the devaluation of the Naira, are significant hurdles.

He noted, “Subsidized airfares are subject to Forex fluctuations and the local economy.” This situation highlights the broader economic context that impacts airline operations and profitability. Despite these challenges, UNA remains committed to expanding its fleet and improving connectivity for Nigerian travelers.

To bolster its operations, United Nigeria Airlines plans to acquire five additional Embraer 190 aircraft by the end of the second quarter of 2025. Prof. Okonkwo stated, “Our goal is to ease the pain of Nigerian travelers and contribute to economic growth.” The new aircraft will enable the airline to expand its routes and enhance service delivery, further positioning UNA as a competitive player in the aviation market.

With this initiative, UNA aims to not only improve its services but also support the broader goals of economic development and job creation in the region.
