After an eight year break from acting, veteran Nollywood star Genevieve Nnaji is set to make a major return to the screen with a lead role in BBC Studios’ upcoming thriller series, Wahala.
Her last on screen appearance was in the 2018 film Lionheart, which also marked her directorial debut and gained international attention as one of Nigeria’s most acclaimed productions.
The new six part series is an adaptation of Wahala, a novel by BAFTA nominated screenwriter Theresa Ikoko. The production is being developed by BBC Studios through its Firebird Pictures division and is expected to premiere on BBC One as well as stream on BBC iPlayer.
The series features a strong ensemble cast including Adelayo Adedayo, Deborah Ayorinde, Cush Jumbo, and Susan Wokoma. It follows the lives of four Nigerian British women in London whose friendships are tested as buried secrets, past trauma, and emotional tensions begin to surface.
Speaking on her return, Nnaji described the project as an exciting experience.
“I’m very happy to be joining Wahala and to be working with such a brilliant team. It’s an intriguing story, and I’m excited to be a part of it,” she said.
Executive producer Elizabeth Kilgarriff also praised the cast, noting the strength of the lineup.
“We are so proud to be announcing our incredible cast for Wahala and can’t wait to see them breathe life into these wonderful characters,” she stated.

Nnaji’s comeback has already generated widespread excitement among fans, marking one of the most anticipated returns in Nollywood connected talent in recent years.
