The journey of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) to official recognition by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) was a long and contested one that stretched back nearly a decade before its final approval in 2026.
The party first submitted its application for registration in 2017, joining a list of emerging political movements seeking entry into Nigeria’s expanding multiparty system. However, the process was delayed for years due to administrative challenges and legal disputes over compliance with INEC requirements.
Frustrated by the prolonged delay, the NDC pursued legal action, eventually taking its case to the Federal High Court. The court ruled in favour of the party, directing INEC to proceed with its registration after finding that the necessary conditions had been met.
Following the judgment, INEC complied with the court order and officially registered the Nigeria Democratic Congress. The commission later presented the party with its certificate of registration in early February 2026, formally ending the years long struggle for recognition.
With the approval, the NDC joined the growing list of political parties in Nigeria, marking its entry into the formal political arena ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Party officials described the development as the conclusion of a “long and tortuous journey,” expressing relief that the legal battle had finally paved the way for full participation in Nigeria’s democratic process.
