A humorous exchange inside a courtroom has generated widespread discussion on social media after a suspect blamed Nigeria’s economic difficulties and the policies of President Bola Tinubu for his alleged involvement in crime.

In a video that has since gone viral, the man, who was standing trial for an offence that was not disclosed, pleaded for mercy while addressing the court in Igbo language.

“Please forgive me, I will not do it again, I am not jobless, I have a handwork. it’s Tinubu’s fault,” the suspect said, triggering laughter from court officials and other attendees present during the proceedings.

Although the remark was made in a light hearted manner, the suspect’s comments touched on a broader national conversation about rising living costs, unemployment pressures and the economic challenges many Nigerians have faced in recent years. The courtroom reaction reflected how concerns about hardship have become deeply embedded in everyday public discourse.

The exact charge against the suspect was not revealed in the video, making it impossible to determine the sentence he could face if convicted. In Nigeria, penalties vary widely depending on the nature of the offence, the circumstances surrounding it and the discretion of the court. While economic hardship may be presented as a mitigating factor during sentencing, it is generally not considered a legal defence for criminal conduct.

The incident has also renewed discussion about poverty in Nigeria. According to recent estimates from international and domestic agencies, tens of millions of Nigerians live below the poverty line, with inflation, currency depreciation and high food prices placing additional strain on households. While poverty does not directly cause crime, economists and social researchers have long noted that prolonged economic distress can increase social tensions and create conditions that make criminal activity more likely in some communities.

As the video continues to circulate, many Nigerians have reacted with a mix of amusement and sympathy, viewing the suspect’s statement as both a joke and a reflection of the economic frustrations felt by many citizens across the country.
