The World Igbo Congress has called on Nigerians at home and in the diaspora to actively participate in the democratic process by registering to vote ahead of the 2027 general elections.

In a statement dated May 11, 2026, and issued after the organisation’s Board of Directors Quarterly Meeting, the apex Igbo diaspora body stressed the importance of civic participation, urging eligible citizens not to miss the opportunity to shape the future of the country through the ballot box.

The statement, signed by the Chairman of the organisation, Dr. Sir Festus Okere, and the Secretary General, Sir Chris Ogara, emphasized that voting remains one of the strongest tools available to citizens in influencing governance, public policy, and leadership decisions.

According to the Congress, Nigerians who have not yet registered to vote should do so immediately to avoid missing official deadlines ahead of the 2027 polls.

“Make your voice heard. For you to have freedom, you must participate in power by participating fully and actively in elections,” the statement read.

The organisation warned against political apathy, noting that failure to register and vote amounts to disenfranchising oneself and allowing others to make critical decisions on behalf of non-participants.

The Congress further stated that voting plays a vital role in addressing issues such as inequality, insecurity, poverty, and ethnic injustice, while also promoting policies that advance the welfare of citizens.

Highlighting the benefits of voter participation, the group said voting enables citizens to choose leaders who reflect their values, protect civil rights, shape long-term national priorities, and strengthen democratic institutions.

The statement also described voter registration and participation as simple but powerful actions capable of producing meaningful political and social change.

The World Igbo Congress concluded its appeal with a strong call to action, urging Nigerians to take responsibility for the nation’s future by participating fully in the electoral process.

“Do not complain. Vote,” the statement concluded.
