Chelsea FC has explained the circumstances surrounding the departure of its former head coach, saying the decision to part ways midway through the 2025 to 2026 season came after he resigned while pursuing an opportunity to succeed Pep Guardiola at Manchester City.

In a statement released by the club, Chelsea admitted that the 2025 to 2026 campaign was “a hugely disappointing one for the Club and its supporters,” adding that one of the biggest setbacks was the disruption caused by the change in the head coach position during the Christmas period.

The club said it decided to address the matter publicly following recent developments, explaining why the former manager left Stamford Bridge on January 1, 2026.

According to Chelsea, it was informed in the autumn of 2025 that the coach “might be” in line to replace Guardiola at the end of the season.

“It became clear to us that it was his strong desire to succeed Guardiola and that he was fully committed to pursuing the opportunity, despite the fact he was under a long term contract which he had no right to terminate,” the statement read.

Chelsea said the situation escalated in December 2025 when the coach “unexpectedly and abruptly resigned” from his role.

“Obviously, we felt let down as we believed that his head and heart were focused on another club and another opportunity, despite having just arrived at Chelsea the year before,” the club said.

While acknowledging that no club wants to replace its manager in the middle of a season, Chelsea said it had little choice after the coach decided not to continue in the role.

“The Club was left with no choice but to protect our players, our supporters, and the Badge and accept his resignation,” the statement added.

Chelsea also confirmed that confidential settlement agreements had been reached with both Manchester City and the former head coach.

“In the circumstances and given the mutual respect between clubs, a confidential settlement has been reached with Manchester City, which includes the payment of compensation. A confidential settlement has also been reached with the former Head Coach under which he will pay compensation,” the club stated.

Looking ahead, Chelsea expressed confidence in new manager Xabi Alonso, describing him as “a Manager who has an exceptional football mind and is a professional of the highest integrity.”

The club added that Alonso “has all the attributes to deliver the success the Club’s supporters deserve and expect.”
