Nigeria international Moses Simon has revealed that he was released by Rangers International early in his career because he was not from Nigeria’s South East region, describing the experience as one of the defining moments of his football journey.
Speaking about his rise to the top, the Super Eagles winger said the setback came when he was still trying to establish himself in the domestic game.
“I was dropped by Rangers International because I wasn’t Igbo.”
Despite the disappointment, Simon refused to let the rejection derail his ambition of becoming a professional footballer. He continued working on his game and eventually secured opportunities that launched a successful career abroad.
The 29-year-old has since developed into one of Nigeria’s most consistent footballers. After leaving the country, he played for Slovak side AS Trenčín before moving to Belgian clubs KAA Gent and Royal Antwerp. He later joined French side FC Nantes, where he became one of the club’s standout performers, earning praise for his pace, creativity and attacking contributions.
At international level, Simon has been a key figure for the Super Eagles, representing Nigeria at multiple Africa Cup of Nations tournaments and the FIFA World Cup. He played an important role in Nigeria’s runner-up finish at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations in Côte d’Ivoire and has consistently been one of the national team’s most reliable attacking players.
His revelation has reignited conversations about fairness in youth football recruitment, with many fans pointing to his career as proof that talent and determination can overcome early setbacks.
